Tummy Tuck

Procedure

When pregnancy, severe weight loss or age leave the abdomen saggy and weak with an unsightly bulge, the tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) surgery is designed to restore the shape of the abdomen. Tummy tuck is the surgical procedure that removes the extra skin and fat of the abdomen accumulated through the ageing process and pregnancy. The muscles of the abdomen will be tightened during the surgery to produce a relatively tight and flat abdomen.
During your initial consultation, Dr. Gharakhani will discuss with you the benefits and risks of undergoing a tummy tuck. Your individual body shape is examined to determine whether or not you will benefit from the procedure.

What types of tummy tucks are available

A full tummy tuck includes removal of extra skin and fat as well as tightening the abdominal muscles. This tummy tuck requires 2 incisions, from hip bone to hip bone and around the belly button.

A partial tummy tuck is best for people who have a muffin top, but who don't have extra skin and fat in the lower abdomen. This type of tummy tuck does not involve the belly button. Another option is the lipoabdominoplasty, which includes both liposuction and a tummy tuck.
After a tummy tuck, patients generally need to plan for 2-4 weeks off work, depending on the type of tummy tuck. The belly may be swollen or bruised, but pain or discomfort typically subsides within a week. Medication generally manages any pain or discomfort very effectively during early recovery. Any kind of abdominal strain must be avoided, including heavy exercise, sex, lifting, and housework for 2 weeks after the surgery. However, patients are encouraged to walk as often as possible, as this helps with circulation and can enhance healing.
